A small desk that reads listings closely
The Night Notebook has published one ranking of Android games since 2021. It is written by people who used to assess app submissions for a living and never lost the habit.
Our reviewers spent years on the other side of a store queue, deciding whether submissions met the rules, and that work leaves a permanent mark: you learn to read a listing line by line before you form an opinion about the game behind it. Price, in-app purchase range, permissions, content rating, last update, developer contact details. Most of the disagreements readers have with a ranking turn out to be disagreements about what a listing actually said, so we start there and we quote the figures we found.
We founded the publication in 2021 for a narrow reason. Lists of Android games were easy to find and almost impossible to check: the order was rarely explained, the numbers were rarely sourced, and it was often unclear whether anyone had run the games at all. Our answer was deliberately modest — one page, a small number of titles, a score we can justify in a sentence, and a written method anyone can hold us to.
How the desk works
The ranking is a standing shortlist rather than a monthly refresh for its own sake. We re-check it whenever something material moves on a listing: a price change, a new permission, a shift in what the free portion includes, a game leaving the store. When enough has changed to alter the order, we publish a new edition and date it. Between editions the reasoning goes into the journal.
Scoring itself is comparative, not arithmetic. Each candidate is placed against the games already on the page and moved until the order stops changing; only then does it get a number. The full procedure, including the three criteria and the five bands of the scale, is written out in how we rate.
Independence
Placement is not for sale, at any price, in any form. We take no developer submissions and no arrangements that would give anyone a say in the order. There are no affiliate programmes on this site, and the only external links we publish point to public Google Play listings — the same pages any reader can open. The Night Notebook is an independent editorial publication and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google LLC.
What we do not do
We do not rank by downloads
Install figures are reported because they come from the listing, and ignored when the order is decided. A wide audience is a fact about a game, not a verdict on it.
We take no submissions
Readers can suggest a title and often do. Developers cannot buy, request or negotiate a review, and nothing arrives on this page because somebody asked for it.
No unexplained score
If a number cannot be defended in one sentence, it does not go out. That rule keeps entries short and keeps us from hiding behind adjectives.
Corrections
Every change is dated. Where a store figure moved after publication we say so rather than quietly restating it, and where we simply got a placement wrong we leave the correction visible. - Read The store listing in full: price, purchase range, permissions, content rating, last update.
- Play On a small screen and a large one, in the conditions readers actually use, until an opinion holds.
- Order Candidates compared against the page until the sequence stops moving, then a score is attached.
- Publish The edition is dated, and the figures quoted are the ones we read that week.
- Re-check Prices and permissions watched between editions; corrections dated when they land.
